Composite & PVC Decking — Trex

Trex Decking Installed Right

The brand that invented composite decking, in five composite tiers plus fire-rated Refuge PVC — specified for your climate, installed to keep the warranty real, and built to be the last deck you'll ever need.

Why Trex

The Deck You Stop Having to Maintain

Trex invented wood-alternative composite decking nearly 30 years ago and remains the largest manufacturer in the category — the safe, proven choice for a deck that looks like wood without wood's upkeep. No staining. No sealing. No splinters, no rot, no insects. Just soap and water, season after season.

Every current Trex board is fully capped composite (or, for fire zones, ignition-resistant PVC) — the early uncapped product that gave composite its dated reputation was discontinued over a decade ago. Boards are made in the U.S. from roughly 95% recycled and reclaimed content, so the deck under your feet is as easy on the environment as it is on your weekends.

Built for Sacramento summers.

Independent testing has measured dark Trex boards around 145–155°F on days that were only 80–86°F. Trex's SunComfortable technology (standard on Transcend Lineage) genuinely reduces heat buildup — up to 35°F versus their original boards. One honest note: Trex's test compares a dark board to a light one, so part of that reduction is color, not just the technology. For a barefoot-friendly deck in the Valley, we lead with lighter colors first, heat tech second — and we'll bring samples so you can feel the difference before you commit.

The Lineup

Six Lines, Real Differences

Trex isn't one product — it's a ladder from an entry board priced against wood to a luxury exotic-grain line and a fire-rated PVC. We help you land on the tier that fits your budget, your backyard, and how you'll actually use the deck.

Trex Enhance

Good — Entry

25-yr

Priced to compete with pressure-treated wood. Two collections — Basics (solid colors) and Naturals (wood-grain texture). Five colors carry SunComfortable heat-mitigating tech. The most affordable way onto a Trex deck.

Trex Select

Better — Value-Mid

35-yr

Broader color range than Enhance, curveable for rounded designs. Runs slightly thinner than the other lines — never mix it with another tier on the same deck. Several 2026 colors now carry SunComfortable.

Trex Transcend

Best — Flagship

50-yr

1" thick, deepest grain, highest scratch resistance (five-star), richest multi-tonal colors across Tropicals and Earth Tones. The line most homeowners picture when they think 'Trex.'

Trex Transcend Lineage

Best — Heat-Focused

50-yr

Same construction and 50-year warranty as Transcend, but the entire line carries SunComfortable technology — Trex's coolest-running composite. Linear grain, cooler-toned palette. The pick for barefoot-heavy, full-sun decks.

Trex Signature

Luxury — Ultra-Premium

50-yr

Launched 2024 — the most photorealistic exotic-hardwood grain Trex makes, and the most scratch-resistant board in the lineup. The top of the Trex ladder, priced accordingly.

Trex Refuge

PVC — Fire-Rated

50-yr

Ignition-resistant PVC (not composite) built for wildfire-hazard zones — Class A flame spread. A different material than the five composite lines, for properties in mapped fire zones.

The Warranty

Protection That Lasts Decades

Trex backs its boards with 25-, 35-, and 50-year warranties depending on the line — some of the longest terms in decking. The coverage is real, and it's one of the main reasons homeowners choose Trex over wood. It's also worth understanding before you need it, so there are no surprises later.

We install to Trex's published spec precisely because proper installation is what keeps the warranty valid — improper gapping is the single most common reason a claim gets denied.

Never covered

Labor and freight — you pay to remove and reinstall even covered boards

The Installer Matters

Why Your Installer Changes What Your Warranty Covers

TrexPro is a real, tiered certification

TrexPro runs three tiers — TrexPro, Gold, and Platinum — earned through training and registered, inspected project volume, not just a loyalty rebate. The base product warranty is the same regardless of installer, but a TrexPro Platinum builder can offer an extended labor warranty (commonly 5 years on decking alone, 10 on a matched decking-plus-railing system) that Trex doesn't otherwise provide. Labor is the one thing the standard warranty never covers, so this is the practical reason certification matters to you.

Two things worth knowing

There's an open class-action investigation (announced August 2025, not a filed or settled case) into warping and cupping on the Enhance line, with some owners reporting boards deforming shortly after install. And a real, easy-to-miss install hazard: reflected sunlight from Low-E windows can char or bow composite boards. We plan framing and clearance around both, so neither becomes your problem.

Installation

Installed Right, So Your Warranty Stays Real

A great board installed wrong is a warranty claim waiting to happen. We follow Trex's installation guide to the letter — because that's what keeps your coverage in force and your deck performing for decades.

Framing to spec

16" on-center for standard runs, tightening to 12" for a 45° diagonal — a spacing requirement that's easy to miss if it's not planned from the start.

Temperature-dependent gapping

Board gaps change with the weather — the '40°F rule.' Hidden fastener clips set the side gap automatically on grooved boards.

Joist tape & flashing

Trex Protect joist tape on the framing protects the wood underneath, the part you can't see but that holds the whole deck up.

Low-E window check

Reflected sunlight from energy-efficient glass can char or bow composite. We check sightlines before we frame.

Built for Your Region

Specified for Your Part of Northern California

Northern California isn't one climate. We specify your Trex deck around the weather, sun, and risk where your home actually sits.

Sacramento & Central Valley

Beat the summer heat

Dark composite boards can run 145–155°F in direct sun on an 80–86°F day — and hotter still on a real Valley afternoon. We steer full-sun, barefoot-heavy decks toward lighter colors and Transcend Lineage, which carries Trex's SunComfortable heat-mitigating tech across the whole line.

Lake Tahoe & The Foothills

Cold-climate stability and fire-zone options

Composite holds up well through Sierra freeze-thaw cycles. For properties in mapped wildfire-hazard areas, Trex Refuge is an ignition-resistant PVC line with a Class A flame spread rating — a different material built specifically for WUI zones.

SF Bay Area & Sonoma Coast

Moisture and morning fog

Trex's three-sided capping leaves the underside bare, so airflow underneath matters in shaded, fog-prone, or damp coastal spots. We frame for ventilation and drainage so the boards stay sound through years of marine-layer mornings.

FAQ

Trex Decking — Common Questions

Hot enough to plan around, and we'll help you do that before you pick a color. Independent temperature testing has measured dark Trex boards in the 145–155°F range on days that were only 80–86°F — on a real Central Valley summer day, dark colors can run hotter still. Trex's SunComfortable technology (standard on the entire Transcend Lineage line, plus select Enhance and Select colors) genuinely reduces heat buildup — up to 35°F versus their original boards. One honest note on that figure: Trex's test compares a dark board to a light one, so part of the reduction is color, not just the technology. For pool decks, play areas, or anywhere bare feet are common, we lead with lighter colors and the Lineage collection.

Five composite tiers plus one PVC fire-rated line. Enhance is the entry tier, priced against pressure-treated wood. Select steps up with a broader color range and is curveable. Transcend is the flagship — thickest boards, deepest grain, highest scratch resistance. Transcend Lineage is identical to Transcend but built specifically around heat mitigation, making it Trex's coolest-running composite. Signature is the luxury tier with the most realistic exotic-hardwood grain. Refuge is a separate PVC product built for wildfire-hazard zones. Warranty length tracks the tier: 25 years on Enhance, 35 on Select, and 50 on Transcend, Lineage, Signature, and Refuge.

Full coverage runs the first 10 years, then it prorates on a sliding scale for the remainder of the term. One detail worth knowing: the fade standard itself loosens after year 25 — meaning a deck can fade more visibly in years 26–50 and still fall inside what the warranty considers acceptable. Labor and freight are never covered under any tier, and proper installation is what keeps the warranty valid at all — improper board gapping is the single most common reason a claim gets denied. We install to Trex's published guide precisely so your warranty stays in force.

For most Northern California homeowners, yes — and the math improves the longer you stay in the home. Trex runs roughly 2–3× pressure-treated wood upfront, but wood decks need staining, sealing, and eventual board replacement every few years. Trex needs soap and water. Over a 10–15 year horizon, the maintenance savings and the absence of splinters, rot, and insect damage make it the lower-total-cost choice — and it looks better for longer while doing it.

The warranty terms tell the story: 25 years on Enhance, 35 on Select, and 50 on Transcend, Transcend Lineage, Signature, and Refuge. Real-world service life typically meets or exceeds the warranty term when the deck is installed correctly and given basic care. The boards won't rot, splinter, or suffer insect damage — the main things that end a wood deck's life. Fading and surface staining are the variables, and they're manageable with the right color choice and routine cleaning.

Sometimes — but only if the existing framing is structurally sound, level, and spaced correctly for composite. Trex boards are non-structural and must bear on at least three joists, so the framing underneath has to meet spec: 16" on-center for standard runs, tighter for angled layouts. We inspect your existing frame before recommending a resurface versus a full rebuild, because a bad frame under good boards is a warranty risk and a performance problem.

Joists at 16" on-center for standard runs, tightening significantly for angled or diagonal decking — a 45° herringbone pattern effectively needs 12" framing, a spacing requirement that's easy to miss if it's not planned from the start. Board gapping is temperature-dependent (the '40°F rule'), and hidden fastener clips set the side gap automatically on grooved-edge boards. We follow Trex's installation guide to the letter, use Trex Protect joist tape on the framing, and plan for the Low-E window hazard — reflected sunlight from energy-efficient glass can char or bow composite boards, so we check sightlines before framing.

Color matters more than any technology — a light board of any tier will run cooler than a dark board of the premium tier. Within that, Transcend Lineage is the answer, because it's the only line that carries Trex's SunComfortable heat-mitigating tech across its entire color range. For a pool deck, a play area, or a Sacramento backyard you'll use barefoot all summer, we typically land on a lighter Lineage color and design shade where we can.

Roughly $25–95 per square foot installed depending on the line — Enhance around $25–55, Select $30–65, Transcend $40–85, and Signature at the top end up to ~$95 on premium framing and railing. Materials are typically only a quarter to a third of the total project cost — labor, substructure, and railing make up the rest, and railing is a separate line item that's easy to underestimate. These are directional industry figures; we'll price your actual project with a free on-site estimate.
